From Cenotes to the Caribbean: A Mayan Riviera Destination Wedding

In March 2026, Center of Attention Events traveled to the beautiful Mayan Riviera for a destination wedding at the five star resort gated in an eco-community, The Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Surrounded by tropical landscapes, winding waterways, white-sand beaches, and the Caribbean Sea, Mayakoba became home for four days of celebrations with the couple’s closest family and friends.

The wedding weekend consisted of four events, each with its own setting and personality. From vegan tacos and margaritas in Mayakoba’s El Pueblito to dinner inside a cenote, a wedding ceremony on the sand, and a farewell brunch, the weekend gave guests a chance to experience so much of what makes the Mayan Riviera special.

Full-Service Planning, From Los Angeles to the Mayan Riviera

A destination wedding like this starts long before anyone boards a flight to Mexico. As full-service event producers, our team worked closely with the couple from the earliest stages of planning, traveling with them to Mexico multiple times to tour properties, meet with vendors, explore the area, and find the place where they could picture themselves getting married.

Once they found their dream venue at Banyan Tree Mayakoba, we began bringing all of the pieces together. Custom invitations were created with Sugar River Stationers, transportation and shuttles were coordinated by our planners for every event, and our team worked directly with the venues, caterers, entertainers, and local vendors throughout Mexico.

Planning four events in a destination means keeping track of hundreds of moving pieces, but our goal is always for our couples to feel as little of that work as possible. We are there for the site visits, tastings, design decisions, vendor meetings, transportation schedules, timelines, and all of the small choices that come up along the way.

And when the wedding day finally arrives, we are still there, right up until the moment we lead our couple to the aisle. From there, we stay alongside them throughout the day while our team handles everything happening behind the scenes. Our couples should never have to wonder where they need to be, whether a vendor has arrived, or what is supposed to happen next. They get to enjoy their wedding. We take care of the rest.

For this particular weekend, that meant coordinating everything from a cenote rehearsal dinner and guest transportation to a beachfront ceremony, Mayan performers, a boat arrival, mariachi, dinner service, cake cutting, live entertainment, and a reception that continued until 2:00 a.m. From the first scouting trip to Mexico through the final farewell brunch, we were there every step of the way.

Welcome to Mayakoba

The festivities began with a welcome party in Mayakoba’s charming El Pueblito. The colorful village square offered a casual setting for everyone to come together for the first time and settle into the weekend ahead.

Guests enjoyed locally catered vegan tacos and margaritas in the open air, catching up with friends and family who had traveled to Mexico for the celebration. A magician entertained the guests in the intimate setting, wowing everyone as they said hello for the first time in paradise. It was relaxed, fun, and exactly the right way to welcome everyone to the Mayan Riviera.

A Rehearsal Dinner Inside a Cenote

The following evening, guests left Mayakoba by private shuttle for one of the most iconic settings of the weekend, Cancun’s iconic Alux Restaurant.

Built within a natural cenote cave, Alux gave the rehearsal dinner a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the weekend. Guests descended underground into limestone caverns for dinner surrounded by the natural formations of the cave.

Face painters were also there for the evening, creating Día de los Muertos-inspired designs for guests. Between the cave itself, dinner, and the face painting, the rehearsal dinner became much more than the traditional night-before gathering. It was an experience guests could only have had in this part of Mexico.

A Wedding on the Sand

The wedding day began on the beach at Banyan Tree Mayakoba, with the Caribbean Sea just beyond the ceremony. The couple brought together traditions that were important to them and their families, incorporating both Jewish and Catholic elements into the ceremony and celebration.

After exchanging vows on the sand, the newlyweds were escorted from the ceremony by a Mayan shaman before boarding a boat for their arrival at cocktail hour.

Guests were waiting at MK Blue as the couple arrived by water, where cocktail hour was already filled with music and performers. Traditional Mayan dancers and drummers performed for guests, a mariachi band played, and towering puppets dressed as Frida Kahlo moved through the celebration.

It was one of those parts of the wedding where there was something happening everywhere you looked.

Entertainment From the Ceremony to the Last Dance

Entertainment was woven into every part of the wedding day, beginning before the ceremony even started. As guests arrived on the beach and took their seats, they were welcomed by the music of a live pianist and violinist, setting the tone for the ceremony ahead.

Cocktail hour brought a complete change of energy. As guests arrived, traditional Mayan dancers and drummers greeted them alongside incredible fifteen-foot puppets of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. An eight-piece mariachi band, dressed entirely in white, joined the performers and filled the waterfront with music.

Then it was time for the newlyweds to make their entrance. The bride and groom arrived by boat accompanied by a Mayan shaman in a full ceremonial headdress. As their boat pulled up to the dock, the mariachi band, Mayan dancers, drummers, and towering Frida and Diego puppets were all waiting to welcome them. It was one of the biggest moments of the day and an entrance their guests certainly were not expecting.

The performances continued throughout the reception. A live saxophone player entertained during dinner, followed by an incredible DJ who kept the party going until 2:00 a.m. Even the cake cutting had its own surprise. Stilt walkers in Día de los Muertos makeup appeared around the couple as they cut their wedding cake, turning another part of the evening into a performance.

From the quiet piano and violin that welcomed guests to the ceremony to the full celebration waiting on the dock and the late-night dance floor, every part of the entertainment was planned to give guests something new to experience as the day unfolded.

An Entirely Vegan Wedding Dinner

The reception continued at MK Blue, where Banyan Tree’s culinary team created a completely vegan wedding dinner. Guests were served a selection of Italian and Mexican vegan entrées, giving the couple a menu that reflected both their preferences and the destination.

Dessert was vegan as well. The wedding cake was made by Ali Cakes, a local baker from Tulum, and became its own moment during the reception. As the couple cut the cake, stilt walkers performed around them, turning the traditional cake cutting into another piece of entertainment for their guests.

After dinner, the dance floor took over. The DJ kept the reception going late into the night, with a live saxophone player joining the party for a special performance. Guests danced until 2:00 a.m., bringing three days of anticipation and celebration to a very late and very fun finish.

One Last Brunch

The following morning, everyone came together one final time for a farewell brunch at Banyan Tree Mayakoba.

After a weekend with so much packed into it, brunch gave guests a chance to slow down, talk about the night before, and spend a few more hours together before flights home began. It was a simple and fitting close to four days in Mexico.

From the first welcome margarita to the last dance, this wedding was a reflection of the couple and the place they chose to bring everyone together. There were Jewish and Catholic traditions, Mexican food and music, Mayan performers, a cenote dinner, a ceremony on the Caribbean sand, an entirely vegan menu, and plenty of surprises along the way.

It is about taking care of a couple and their guests from the moment the idea begins to take shape until the weekend is over.
